Why Leaders Need Space to Think
“I just need time to think.”
I used to say this all the time when I was a VP at Pandora, and it hit me again listening to Tracy Sinclair on The Coaching Edge Podcast.
What stayed with me most is this: presence is not a luxury. It is a leadership discipline.
Leaders move fast. Meetings stack up. Decisions keep coming. But without space to think, we lose clarity. We react too quickly, listen less deeply, and show up without the kind of presence our teams actually need.
Taking time to recharge is not stepping away from leadership.
It is part of leadership.
That is the why for me.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through executive coaching is the awareness and importance of creating that space to think. Space to reflect. Space to reset. Space to respond with intention.
I wish I understood that more deeply back then.
Because when leaders protect that space, they lead with more calm, clarity, and steadiness and people feel the difference.
Where are you giving yourself space to think so you can lead with more presence?
