Ambiguity and change are key communication opportunities

One of the biggest mistakes I see? Leaders going silent when things are unclear. Waiting for full clarity before speaking up. Hoping ambiguity will magically sort itself out.

Here’s the truth: uncertainty and change are part of leadership. And your team knows when something’s shifting — even if no one’s said it out loud.

So, what do you do?

Acknowledge the grey.
You don’t need to have everything figured out to start a conversation. Try:
“Here’s what we know so far…”
“This is still evolving, but I want you in the loop…”
“I may not have all the answers, but I’ll be transparent as we move through this…”

Share the process, not just the outcome.
Let your team in on how decisions are being made. Who’s involved. What’s being weighed. It builds trust—and brings your team into the problem-solving process, which they likely want to be part of anyway.

Keep it human.
Ambiguity triggers anxiety. Your calm, honest presence matters more than polished perfection. Don’t disappear when your team needs clarity, connection, and direction.

If you’re navigating complex change, don’t do it alone. C.E.co Executive and Leadership Coaching helps you lead through the fog with confidence and clarity. Let’s connect.
